The first flurry of Christmas ads are here, though there have been one or two other things happening in the big wide world this week so you’d be forgiven for having missed them. There’s the US election and protracted aftermath on one side of the Atlantic, and a fresh round of European lockdowns on the other – but it’s well worth digging into the box of festive delights. Coronavirus and the possibility of a socially-distanced Christmas looms large but brands and agencies have deftly incorporated it into their strategies. Some, like TK Maxx give a small, euphemistic nod, while others like Amazon embrace the emotional turmoil head on to create something quite beautiful. Very and Greenies go for evergreen, slice of life observations, Argos embraces fantasy and razzmatazz and Australian department store Myer has created a very Covid Christmas carol that unites the audience with a humorous take on a very strange year.
