Seed Animation Animates Coffee Art to Tell Stories for Shell

Seed Animation Studio has produced a 1 minute short film for Shell called ‘Coffee Stories’, with Iris. The film promotes the various ‘barista style’ coffees that are available in Shell service stations around the world. Seed’s Morgan Powell and Neil Kidney co-directed the spot.

Coffee Stories promotes the range of coffees that Shell offer, journeying through short ‘coffee cup stories’ and meeting quirky characters driving ‘coffee cup vehicles’ along the way. The characters themselves are created using barista latte art. 

Co-director Morgan Powell said: “It was important for Shell and Iris’ creative team to have an authentic feel to the coffee, and so we pitched the idea of using real latte art to create the sequence of ‘latte-mation’.”  Each character and key frame was created using real latte art. Seed worked alongside long reining UK Latte Art Champion Dhan Tamang to create the sequence over a two day shoot- 250 lattes were made in all. The rest of the film was created in CGI, while using stop frame techniques to achieve authenticity.
