'Outsiders and Visionaries: Documentaries' to be part of The Criterion Channel’s November 2023 lineup

Matt Wolf’s complete filmography is coming to The Criterion Channel in November in tandem with the publication of Input, a book comprised of hundreds of VHS stills from his film Recorder.

Wolf’s feature documentary films include Wild Combination about the cult cellist and disco producer Arthur Russell, Teenage about early youth culture and the birth of teenagers, Recorder about the activist Marion Stokes, who recorded television 24 hours a day for 30 years, and Spaceship Earth about the controversial Biosphere 2 experiment, where 8 people lived quarantined inside of a miniature replica of the planet.

These films will play together for the first time alongside four of Wolf’s short documentaries: Another Hayride about the self-help guru Louise Hay, Bayard & Me about the civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, who adopted his younger boyfriend in the 1980s for equal rights, The Face of AIDS about a controversial 1992 Benetton advertisement, and I Remember about the artist and writer Joe Brainard.

In tandem with this survey of Wolf’s films, Pre-Echo Press in releasing the book Input, compromised of hundreds of VHS stills Wolf pulled, while going through 700 hours of VHS tapes of television for his film Recorder. The 214-page illustrated book features an essay by Wolf. Pre-Echo Press is founded by the artist Matt Connors.

Metrograph will host a book launch on November 19th alongside a screening of Recorder with a Q&A moderated by New Yorker writer Doreen St. Felix. In addition, Metrograph Books is producing a limited edition print to coincide with the publication, featuring stills from 1980s talk show audience reaction shots. The print is being made by Du-Good Press and printmaker Leslie Diuguid.

Wolf recently produced the Sundance award-winning HBO documentary The Stroll about the history of the Meatpacking District from the perspective of transgender sex workers. He is currently completing a multi-part film about Paul Reubens and his alter ego Pee-wee Herman.
